On producing and duetting with longtime collaborator Ashe: “I think the primary thing I look for – when I think of my own music and the stuff I’m putting out, recording, writing, singing myself…I try to think of it in the capacity of an A&R. And to me, on an aesthetic plane, like there are a lot of similarities between like what I strive for, and I think what Ashe strives for.”
On coming up with visuals, and Billie’s “superpower” ability: “I feel that like when I am working on a song, I usually have sort of flashes of inspiration of what a video could be for that song. And sometimes it’s just down to like cool lighting cues, but sometimes it’s like a whole scenario. Billie does that to the nth degree, which has always been her superpower, which I don’t do really.”
On a song that crashed his computer: “Some plug-ins, like synthesizers just take up a lot of like CPU, and they just slow your computer way down. There was some track on Billie‘s first record that just was like a bear. I think it was ‘Good Girls’ ["All The Good Girls Go to Hell"] or like ‘Crown’ ["You Should See Me In a Crown"] was really heavy. [It's] got a lot going on. But usually the goal is to make it sound sparse and spare, but tracks stack and I do a million vocal layers and stuff.”
Billie and Finneas also just dropped a new song dedicated to a “Lost Cause” – listen to it now!
