Alessia Zecchini met a horrible end on July 22, 2017, while participating in a catastrophic freediving excursion in the Blue Hole, a well-known sinkhole in the Red Sea, Egypt.
The arch in the Blue Hole is a difficult and dangerous achievement that has cost many lives over the years. Alessia, a gifted and skilled Italian freediving champion, was determined to complete it. Her safety diver and dive companion was Stephen Keenan, who joined her for this risky dive.
Stephen’s main responsibility as an experienced and expert diver was to assure Alessia’s safety during her descent and ascent, keeping an eye out for any potentially harmful consequences of a quick ascent that could cause a blackout or loss of consciousness.
The dive, however, took a terrible turn when Alessia became disoriented at depth. At a stated depth of 50 meters (164 feet), Stephen reacted quickly and swam for her help while looking for her on the surface.
Surprisingly, Alessia made it back to safety unharmed. Stephen, however, tragically passed out underwater at an unknown depth.
Stephen was discovered floating face down and unconscious after the event. The 25-year-old diver died despite heroic efforts to revive him. The passing of such a talented and well-known safety diver shocked the freediving world.
The sad catastrophe that happened to Alessia Zecchini served as a stark reminder of the inherent hazards and perils involved with the sport of freediving. Alessia’s tenacity and love for the sport were unwavering even after she lost her boyfriend and safety diver.
